Birthstone Bracelet Jewelry-what the law controls the content of gold that everyone is talking about?
Written by aditruhai on March 3rd, 2011
Many birthstone bracelet jewelry and websites handcrafted beaded jewelry tout the differences and similarities between 14 k gold and jewels 14 k gold-filled.
Yes, I read as a solid 14 k gold is just that, solid 14 k gold. And what about the 14 k gold-filled, is a separate enclosed metal alloy from 14 k gold, who wears like solid gold, but at a fraction of the price. In addition, the gold-filled product must be a minimum of 1/8 “thick.
This information is readily available if you take everything at face value and trust that the authors are correct in their writings.
Many websites make the comment that all standards for the classification of gold are mandated by federal law. So, I’m sure you their reasoning for saying the obvious which is the law.
But my question was this. What federal law is all about? I watched a lot of websites and most said that the Federal law standards. Well, well, that the Declaration is now well established. But as the law is this in reference to? My left-brain, engineer thinking led me to look it up. And understand why most sites don’t mention the actual source … it is hard to find! (If someone else has actually made reference to this information, I apologize. “But all the sites that I looked at, not one had this law of origin).
I moved from trusting of other websites and began my search search engine to find the appropriate law.
I wasn’t sure where to start, so I started with weights and measures. That yielded no results. As far as the gold standard as a keyword? No, nothing to both.
It took a couple of hours but I found what I was looking for. It turns out that the Federal Trade Commission has jurisdiction. Is under their consumer protection section, a guide for the jewelry, precious metals and pewter industries. Section 23.4 covers all requirements and guidelines. This section is actually called “misrepresentation of content in gold.” I know it is called “false statement”, but I’m not a lawyer. I have no idea how a standard is called a “misrepresentation.”
Here is the position of the Guide that I found:

So now, anyone else researching birthstone bracelet or beaded jewelry websites that also happens to see ‘ the gold standard is required by law ‘ education; at least you can set your mind at ease and read this Bill for you.
Wishing you the very best,
